Meet Steve
Steve’s passion for democracy is personal. Over a century ago, his family fled violence and persecution in Lithuania to build a new life on the Iron Range. In America, for the first time, they had a say in choosing their leaders. Steve’s father, an Army veteran and well-known sports attorney, developed Parkinson’s Disease later in life, which made it difficult for him to stand. That’s why Steve wrote the law allowing all eligible Minnesotans to cast their ballots from home. Steve is committed to protecting and strengthening our democracy.
Defending democracy.
Steve is proud to be in the “democracy business.” His top priority is protecting the freedom to vote for all eligible Minnesotans. He has helped to deliver an election system that is fair, accurate, honest, and secure. He has played a lead role in enacting once-in-a-generation reforms to make voting more accessible and secure – for seniors, for students, and for all Minnesotans. He has pushed back successfully against efforts by the federal government to impose harsh new voting restrictions – and to capture sensitive personal information on Minnesota voters.
What does the Secretary of State do?
The Office of Secretary of State oversees Minnesota’s election system, providing guidance to the local governments who count votes. The Office also serves as a “welcome mat” for Minnesota’s hundreds of thousands of businesses, providing efficient registration and business tools. In addition, the Office runs the Safe at Home program, which provides home address confidentiality for victims of domestic violence and others who fear for their safety.
